African heritage trailblazers celebrated

The 10-panel exhibit - "Trailblazers 2012 - United We Stand" by Darlene Strong is symbolic of more than 400 years of vibrant African Nova Scotian history, and will be on display at the Cumberland County Museum and Archives for the month of February.

The exhibit expresses collaborations influencing the accomplishments that have helped African Canadians rise above obstacles such as slavery and systemic racism and become specialists in their fields. In commemoration of Her Majesty the Queen's 60th Anniversary, the exhibit reflects on the first African Nova Scotian and second woman to hold the post of Lieutenant Governor as the Queen's representative in Nova Scotia, Honourable Mayann Francis.

The Town of Amherst came on board as a sponsor because it was an opportunity to bring together not only some great artwork and important part of local heritage, but also a way to support local organizations like the museum and artists like Strong, according to Andrew MacGregor, the town of Amherst, NS arts, culture and heritage co-ordinator.

The exhibit will be displayed at the museum during regular business hours throughout the month of February.

Age of Sail Museum Announcement

Congratulations from Cumberland County Heritage Network Society on your funding!!!

The Age of Sail Museum is happy to announce they have received $15,000 from Communities, Culture and Heritage SDI grant program for interpretive design. These funds will go towards an interpretive design plan for the New wind and wave building which funding was announced for in November from ACOA and N.S. Tourism. The maritime company of Camus Productions has been chosen to do the design plan. The plan will be done in such a way as to make implementation possible over a period of time due to funding restraints. Funds from ACOA and NS Tourism towards interpretive were included in the November funding announcement. Local companies will be offered the chance to make quotes for the new signage and volunteer help will be used where possible in erecting the signs. The interpretive plan will include signage for the new building, kiosk and to refresh and renew signage in the main building to assist the flow from one section to the other. The board of the Age of Sail is very excited to see the progress being made on the new addition and am very grateful for the financial help from the various government entities. Thanks also go out to Paul Collins of CMAP and Bernie Murphy of CRDA for their invaluable assistance. The grand opening will be in the spring and we look forward to seeing everyone then.

The Creamery Square get funding for final Phase!

Congratulations have to go out to The Creamery Square in Tatamagouche, NS for obtaining $820,022 from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) for the 6,200 square-foot facility. This marks the last Phase of a Phase Three Plan to upgrade the Centre.

THE CENTRE OF THE ARTS WHEN COMPLETE
- 6,200 square-feet
- To be used for various events such as concerts, performance art, visual art exhibits, conventions, receptions, lectures.
- Auditorium seated capacity of 160 on three removable tiers.
- Foyer (former ice house) can be used as a smaller venue, seating about 30.
- Ground breaking expected this spring; opening expected next summer.

Scott Armstrong, Member of Parliament for Cumberland- Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and La Francophonie, was on hand Sunday November 20, 2011 to make an announcement in regards to the Government of Canada’s investment in the community of Port Greville. The Age of Sail will receive the Phase ll funding for the restoration and expansion of the Age of Sail Heritage Centre. Congratulations Age of Sail!!!

Survey Results from our Mystery Bus Tour
One hundred percent of the people that attended on Oct 15, 2011 enjoyed the Mystery Bus Tour! We did have some difficulty with the PA system on the bus being out of commission and our wireless system did pick up some static along the way. Our tour guide was able to speak loud enough that everyone could hear. We offered facts about Cumberland County and the different areas and had trivia questions with prizes for the winners. Our lunch meal was very leisurely and consisted of two slices of roast beef, two scoops of mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, peas, homemade carrots, coleslaw, roll with butter, homemade mustard pickles, coffee, tea, and water, your choice of dessert - either Lemon Meringue Pie, Coconut Cream Pie, Cherry cheesecake, or pineapple squares. It was enjoyed by all! Cumberland County Heritage Network Society gives a thumbs up to BayView Restaurant in Joggins, owned and operated by Margie Melanson, and Brenda - the cook, for their absolutely fantastic meal and excellent service with smiles!

It was a little on the scarey side but nobody screamed and ran out, even when the lights were turned off. Pitch black darkness and no one said a word for a minute. I can only imagine what was going on in their minds.

That Dutchman's Farm, producers of fine farmstead cheeses, is owned and operated by Maja and Willem van den Hoek. The cheese Willem produces is a "Farmstead Gouda." It is a true heritage cheese that has its roots in the Netherlands, reaching down into the early middle ages.

Over the years they have laid out an extensive network of walking trials and waterways connecting gardens and ponds. Hidden amongst this lives an interesting collection of animals and plants tucked away in special settings. It is a work in progress and well worth the visit to explore. Something for the very young (animals to visit) and the very old (park benches everywhere!) You can wander the farm yard and barns, explore the nature trails, meander through the flowers, herb and water gardens, meet the heritage and exotic animals and stop for lunch between Father's Day and Labour Day at their cafe which provides a spectacular view of the Cobequid Shores of the Bay of Fundy. It's the perfect setting to enjoy nature and take some time out. Admission charged.

The Mystery Bus Tour is over and a great time was had by all who attended! We had beautiful weather - sunshine and blue skies, although it was a bit windy for two of our stops but most did not seem to mind. We did not lose anyones hat.

I gave hints at the beginning of our tour as to where we would be going. We also had trivia questions with prizes for the correct answers. Guess what? I am still not telling where we did stop - as that is to remain part of the mystery!

I will tell those not in attendance that you did miss the very best homecooked restaurant meal which consisted of two slices of roast beef, two scoops of mashed potatoes, gravy, home cooked carrots, peas, corn, coleslaw, roll and butter with your choice of Cherry cheesecake, lemon meringue pie, coconut cream pie,or pineapple squares. It was an eaters feast! My congratulations to the BayView restaurant, owner -Margie Melanson and the cook Brenda which served it all up with smiles and chuckles!

I did manage to keep everyone awake afterwards as we made our way through the best views of the fall coloured trees and Chignecto Bay with the most beautiful backdrop of blue sky that I have seen in awhile.

Watch for future tours and adventures as this was our maiden voyage and in my opinion - we did not sink but rose to the occasion!

Topic: Book Release – Maccan. A Glimpse Into the Past

On Saturday, November 5 and Sunday, November 6, 2011, the Cumberland County Museum will host the official book launch of Chris F. Cameron’s latest book Maccan. A Glimpse Into the Past, and 20% of sales both days (and future sales) will be donated to the Museum. Cameron lives in Edmonton, Alberta, and is a former resident of Maccan. “As a former Maccaner, it is especially pleasing to have the first signing of my latest book at a venue that is committed to preserving County history.”

The 8” by 10” size book provides the reader with a glimpse of a once vibrant community. Like so many communities, Maccan contributed to the development and history of Cumberland County and, as progress came, so did change. With fourteen chapters, two appendices, the 202 page book contains photos, maps, charts and mercantile information on businesses, coal mining, shipbuilding, churches and the railroad. It contains a 17 page chapter of photos and text on the Maccan Power Generating Plant. A Chapter on School Days will spark memories of a by-gone era when local children attended a three room school in Maccan from grades Primary to Grade Six. Maccan had a river shipyard and was a Port of Registry as listed in the Ship Registration Index held in Ottawa. The names of some of those ships built at Maccan are listed.

“Having grown up in Maccan, I remember some of the ‘old-timers’, and walking in many of the original buildings which have long disappeared. Maccan played an important role in the area and that role should not be forgotten.” Cameron devotes a chapter on some of the people of Maccan who contributed to sports, military, politics, business, coal mining; people such as war hero Lloyd Hurley; missionary Maud Harrison; coal mining entrepreneur William Patrick; the Maccan Royals baseball team; and Father of Confederation Jonathan McCully.

About Chris F. Cameron

Having had a diverse 40 year career first in the Military which included a tour of duty as a Peacekeeper, and later in the Federal Public Service, Cameron retired in 2008 as a Special Advisor to a Science Director General. He was the recipient of many awards, including a federal Departmental Merit Award. He has always been interested in history, and the preservation of history. Cameron was instrumental in securing a Monuments Board of Canada bronze plaque at Verchères, Quebec to commemorate Calixa Lavallée, the author of Canada’s National Anthem. He is enjoying his retirement which gives him time to enjoy painting, photography, genealogy, and writing. “I am happy to be able to give part of my proceeds to help the Cumberland County Museum which is an important resource in displaying and preserving local history.” He is planning to write another book, title unknown, but it will be history. “Prairie winters are long, and writing is a good way to get through them.”

WWII Reenactment Weekend

CCHN Executive Meeting Minutes – December 9th, 2010

Oralee called the meeting to order. The minutes will be read later as Anita joined us by speakerphone for a short time. Anita met with Jenna Boon after our last CCHN unfortunately during the course of the meeting the opportunity to discuss issues around the county in detail did not arise. However Anita commented that Jenna is aware that other partners in her geographic region will be important and as Ken noted she understands Cape D’Or and Fundy.

Anita gave us an overview of her meeting with the seven museum sites the previous week (she will also meet with the tourism minister) to discuss issues such as the ANSM being cut back to its 2006 level. Funding cuts could mean some museums may face closure and all should look to the economic drivers in their communities. The ANSM is encouraging a Christmas letter campaign to target local MLA’s and MP’s so they are made aware of the situation.

Shirley commented on the effectiveness of this as they had sent out a letter to the Amherst Downtown Revitalization Committee and had received funding plus an assurance that signage to the museum will be one of their first priorities. Anita noted that any action should be taken in advance of the cut backs in funding programs. Shirley had a conversation with Paul Collins recently and CMAP will not be cutting its funding to the community museums but probably the Provincial ones. The provincial government has not signed off on anything as yet but this could change meaning cuts may happen next year if not this year, commented Anita. However, cuts of 1-2% could mean staff reductions and changes to programming noted Ken, especially when cuts to education had already been announced. He asked Anita if she knew what the percentage could be and this could run as high as 10% but hopefully only around 4%. She also noted that heritage is only a small part of of the overall budget whereas education (cuts expected to be 22%) has a much larger section.

Anita attended a museums day organized by the CMA at the end of November where 150 participants of museums and art associations from across Canada met with senators to discuss the CMA program. It is hoped museums will become self sustaining and one initiative is that 25 million will be available to assist museums leverage private sector money, for example you would have to raise $15,000 to receive another $15,000. There was also the message from some conservatives that in order to gain something you would have to lose something. The next budget to be passed in the house could come into affect after April 1st, 2011. The ANSM is working on collective access and a pilot project is being developed.

Update on Virtual Tours Project - To date seven of the sites have paid their fee for the virtual tours project through the SDI funding. Josh has asked for four payments and 10% will be kept back until the project is finished. Shirley has not received the funding cheque as yet. Oralee suggested sending a reminder e-mail to those sites that have not paid. Josh will make the contact with the museums to set up appointments for filming. Ken noted there is no feedback on the visit to the county in the summer by Roger Brooks. Anita commented that the South West and HRM regions have discussed the Young Canada Works student grants and the fact the previous students can not reapply the following year. Helen noted that the criteria had changed drastically and that they are basically telling museums who they can hire which creates a problem when there only a few students available in rural areas. Anita said only about 6% of grants are approved and that the CMA has taken Heritage Canada to task over this but changes may not happen with this program. The YCW appears to be more interested in the students than the institutions hiring them. Museums need to know why they do not receive Provincial and Federal funding for students.

Oralee suggested a date be set for the CCHN AGM in the spring. The ANSM conference will be held in Tatamagouche from April 28th – 29th so Saturday May 7th 10am in Amherst at the Cumberland County Museum is the tentative date and location. The next executive meeting will be February 3rd with location and time to be set at a later date. Oralee thanked Anita for participating by phone and the meeting continued.

The minutes of the November 9th meeting were read and approved. Jeff asked if we could link to the United Steel Workers to help CCHN get money as they have a big voice. There was a brief discussion on the benefits of going to the newspaper to ‘drum up’ support. Shirley commented on submitting the minutes to the paper and Ken on doing an open letter to the constituents as well as the local MLA’s such as asking if they aware of possible cuts to their local museum which could mean a reduction of services offered. Shirley had statistics from the exit survey taken at Halifax airport showing that 3% of 1.9 million visitors had come to Nova Scotia for arts, culture and heritage and that 19% had visited a cultural heritage center during their visit.

Other Business – Don Agnew would be available to participate in a second JCP program and would qualify if we can put a new spin on the application such as marketing. Shirley also commented on the fact that the Cumberland County Museum was not considered a part of the Amherst Downtown Revitalization project as they are not part of that “downtown core” but that sending out a letter worked as they are going to improve the signage to the museum. A letter will be sent to the newspaper thanking the committee for that. It was agreed that Shirley would work on a JCP for Donald and Ken would do the letter to the constituents asking if they are aware of what heritage is available in the county and the number of staff including students are employed at these sites. It was also decided to invite the media to the AGM for around 1pm. Ken commented on the possible fall out and effects of funding cuts that may take affect in 2012 so Shirley suggested we also invite Scott Armstrong, MP and Brian Skabar and Jim Baillie our local MLA’s.

The CCHN members need to be more aware of what is happening and minutes need to be circulated more quickly to inform of issues such as possible funding cuts. We need to have a voice and articulate and clarify any messages we wish to send out. Shirley reminded us that the first letter sent to Brian Skabar was to mention that CCHN is not part of tourism publications and the reply was what did he want us to do and that he would pass on this information. We need to be clear on what we want as a fair percentage of the county have an interest in heritage. As Shirley noted branding is very useful as Nova Scotia by the Sea makes you think of heritage and Oralee commented that things started with Pier 21 and then spread out across the Province. Visitors come to NS to relax and step back into the past and we need to build our heritage from the ground up as our logo states, Helen noted.

Ken commented on his visitor numbers being down by 3%, possibly due to the delays with the new exhibit not opening till later in the summer. Oralee saw an increase at Age of Sail of about 15% but their revenue was down and that September was down which was unusual. Shirley noted that the registration of joint stocks is due and that we should remove those members from the list who have not paid their fees. Oralee suggested that when we send out the information for the AGM we note that membership ($25.00) is due by then. We will ask everyone to bring something for a pot lunch for the AGM. The contact for the CCGS is Susan Hill.

There was a discussion about the pass out to the schools with coupons for local sites and the possibility of purchasing or getting an IPOD donated for a prize. Delivery of these is not a problem as the school board does this but there is a cost and maybe CCHN could assist with this and Shirley suggested we pay for half of the printing. It was also agreed that CCHN be part of this program and this information will also be added to the AGM e-mail so that more museum sites can participate and visitors are entered into the draw at each site for the prize. Either each site would put in $10 or CCHN help with the funding for the prize. This will be discussed further at the next meeting.

Date of Next Meeting – The next meeting will be February 3rd with the tiem and location to be decided at a later date. The meeting was adjourned at 1:30pm.

Support for the Cumberland County Heritage Network: an Open Letter

Dear Residents of Cumberland County:

On behalf of the board and members of the Cumberland County Heritage Network, I am taking this seasonal opportunity to thank you for your support of our county’s many heritage and cultural sites over the past year. We are also seeking your continued support in the forthcoming year, particularly in regards to the potential budget restraints being considered by the Provincial government.

Our network is made up of active community organizations that play a role in the preservation of our county’s heritage and culture, scattered from Advocate to Malagash (with an associate member in Tatamagouche). We recognize the importance of this resource to our communities and have organized ourselves in order to assist in the promotion and development of heritage and tourism throughout the county. We help to provide the framework for a strong, healthy and forward thinking “community”.

Although many of our sites are operated by volunteer groups we also employ county residents and provide summer jobs and career opportunities for our youth. We collect, preserve, interpret, research and display a wide range of our cultural and natural heritage, and we encourage a wide audience, including both residents and visitors to view exhibits and live theatre, to participate in festivals and events and to pursue their own research.

As a group we help to attract tens of thousands of visitors to our region each year. Our future is dependent on the public’s awareness of what we are doing on behalf of our communities, and why it is important to all of us, by providing opportunities for all residents to participate. It is difficult to imagine what would happen to many of our activities if the possible budget cuts become a reality.

Think of the special events that are organized and held each year that show case our local history, culture and natural heritage. Christmas teas, craft sales and house tours, pancake and maple syrup suppers, the Blessing of the Crops in Minudie, the Gathering of the Clans in Pugwash, Parrsboro’s Rockhound Roundup, Wild Blueberry Festival events, and the Nova Scotia Fibre Arts festival held in Amherst.

Are county residents aware of the economic impact that heritage, culture and tourism have on our communities? Over 900 Cumberland County residents work directly in tourism related jobs, $ 34 million needed tourism dollars are brought into our economy, helping generate approximately $ 13 million in wages. A significant portion of the county’s tourism product is dependent on the sites in our network to attract visitors. While less than 10% of the tourism dollars flows through our cultural and heritage sites, the balance is spent in local restaurants, accommodations, stores and gas stations.

When you consider that there are 1.9 million visitors to Nova Scotia each year, it should be noted that 54% of these visitors enter through Amherst and Tidnish. This suggests that we have an opportunity to significantly enhance the County’s share if we can divert more of this traffic towards our communities and our sites.

What does Cumberland County have to offer to both visitors to our region and residents? We provide opportunities for sight seeing, coastal experiences and for experiencing our culture and heritage. What activities are most visitors likely to participate in? Enjoying nature walks/hiking, historic sites, visiting museums, live theatre and learning about their historic roots.

The development of partnerships with our communities and related businesses and services are essential to ensuring that Cumberland County offers an alternative destination package to Nova Scotia’s visitors. CCHN members have been active participants in the ongoing development of both the Fundy Shore and Northumberland Tourist Destination Area products, with linkages to the central region.

Although we represent a wide range of sites, we do have common issues and concerns. Our financial resources are limited and are very carefully used to cover our operational expenses. Each New Year the same or diminishing resources are required to cover increasing operating expenses. Cuts at this time would represent a potentially overwhelming loss in our resources and may seriously undermine our collective ability to function.

In closing we hope everyone in Cumberland County has a safe and Happy Holiday and Best Wishes for the New Year. Please take some time to reflect on our County’s historic past and the vibrant culture we share today. We need your help to ensure that both visitors to our county and our residents will be able to continue to enjoy participating in our future.

The Scottish Society of Colchester's "CELEBRATE YOUR SCOTTISH ROOTS" weekend - 10am to 1pm - Music and dancing outside the Farmers' Market; enjoy bagpipes, accordion, fiddle and highland dancing. At the Market there will be, along with the usual fare, such Scottish delicacies as scones, oatcakes, shortbread, and perhaps even haggis. At 1:00pm - James Finney will be doing a presentation of Jacobite Dress & Weaponry outside the Farmers' Market. James & his family have recently emigrated to Truro from Scotland where he was a maker of sporrans, a consultant who specialized in historic Scottish costume, and who did 'living history' presentations at Scottish castles and Highland Games.

2:00pm - At the Heritage Centre, Jackie MacConnell will do a Gaelic lesson for Beginners with a few phrases and perhaps even a Gaelic song.

3:00pm - At the Heritage Centre, Barry Shears of Halifax, piper, instructor, and author, will do a presentation on the history of bagpiping on the North Shore. His recently published book Dance To The Piper on the history of bagpiping in Nova Scotia will be on sale at the gift shop in the Heritage Centre.
In the Archives during the day there will be a special exhibit of interest to those seeking information on Scottish ancestors. Lectures in the Heritage Centre will be free. Those wishing to tour the Centre's exhibits (and we hope that many will) will be subject to the usual entry rates.

7:30 p.m. - In the evening we will continue the Scottish theme with a ceilidh at Patterson's Wharf. Bring along your instrument and your singing voice and join us.

Talk Focuses on Recently Rediscovered Early Account of the Acadian Deportation

Sara Beanlands, Halifax-based archaeologist and historian, will be giving a talk for the Tantramar Historical Society on Wednesday, April 14 at 7:00 p.m. at Live Bait Theatre in Sackville, New Brunswick. Her talk will be on an original manuscript by Rev. Dr. Andrew Brown, dated 1819, entitled "Removal of the French inhabitants of Nova Scotia by Lieut. Governor Lawrence & His Majesty's Council in October 1755".

In 1852, a tattered box of papers was discovered in the foyer of an Edinburgh boarding house. A collection of manuscripts relating to the early history and settlement of Nova Scotia, including historical notes, original and transcribed documents, and other contemporary papers was found inside. This remarkable collection of documents had belonged to the Rev. Dr. Andrew Brown, a Scottish Presbyterian minister, University of Edinburgh professor and aspiring historian of formidable intellect, who lived and worked in Nova Scotia from 1787 to 1795. In attempting to write a history of North America, Brown collected a substantial amount of documentary evidence relating to Nova Scotia and subsequently dedicated much of his life to preparing a history of the young frontier colony. The papers were later deposited in the British Museum where they ultimately became known as the 'Brown Manuscripts'. Although his work was not published during his lifetime, Brown's collection has since provided scholars with a wealth of documentary material for historical analysis.

More recently, another cache of related manuscripts surfaced in the collections of the Edinburgh University Library. While this assortment of documents has not been subjected to the same degree of scrutiny as the initial collection, it is undeniably deserving of academic attention. Among the most important documents contained within the Edinburgh collection is an original Brown manuscript dated 1819, entitled "Removal of the French Inhabitants of Nova Scotia by Lieut. Governor Lawrence & His Majesty's Council in October 1755". This is one of the earliest known historical accounts of the Acadian Deportation and the focus of this talk.

Sara Beanlands graduated from Dalhousie University in 1998 with a degree in Social Anthropology and is currently completing her Masters degree in History at Saint Mary's University, with a focus on eighteenth-century Nova Scotia. Her work has been published in the Journal of the Royal Nova Scotia Historical Society and the International Journal of Maritime History. She has been a guest speaker at the University of Edinburgh, the Nova Scotia Historical Society, and the Grand Pré National Historic Site.

Sara began her career in archaeology in 1992 and has worked on a number of projects with Parks Canada, including excavations at Fort Anne, For Lawrence and Beaubassin National Historic Sites. She is currently employed as an archaeologist and historian with Cultural Resource Management Group, an archaeological consulting firm based in Halifax.

“The Rising Tides at Head of Fundy and the Implications for Historic Sites and Dikes” Guest Speaker Mr. Bill Casey

“Rising sea levels are unavoidable and the low-lying areas at Head of Bay of Fundy are at risk” states Bill Casey. “The danger is there and everyone needs to be aware”
In 1869 the Saxby Gale slammed its way into the Atlantic Region, with much destruction and flooding in the Head of Fundy area. Since then the sea level in the region has risen more than 30 centimetres. It is predicted that by the year 2100, the sea level at the head of the Bay of Fundy will rise another 80 cm.

“Studies by several international organizations including a United Nations report on rising sea levels and studies by the Government of Canada have identified the Bay of Fundy as one of the most vulnerable areas of North America” states Mr. Casey. “It is important that we understand the irreversible impact that rising tides will have on all of us.”

“This is a very important issue” states Shirley Nickerson, Manager/Curator of the Cumberland County Museum and Archives. “It is important that Mr. Casey’s message of concern reach all residents of Nova Scotia and we are honoured to be playing a small part in relaying his message.”
Mr. Bill Casey will be the Guest Speaker at the Cumberland County Museum and Archives, 150 Church Street, Amherst on Tuesday, February 16th at 7pm.

It has been announced that the Creamery Square in Tatamgouche has been honoured by the Canadian Museums Association for outstanding achievement in facility development and design. The judges in the process say the Taamagoughe project is “nationally significant and exceeds the current standards of practice” among its peers from coast to coast. The award will be presented in St. John’s at the Museum’s Association’s national conference.

"The Life and Times of Sand Hill"

The Cumberland County Museum & Archives is proud to present local artist Darlene Strong 's travelling Exhibit entitled "The Life and Times of Sand Hill".

During the 1800's a Black Community known as "Sand Hill" was nestled deep inside the Town of Amherst, Nova Scotia near the Bay of Fundy. Today many descendants of the residents of Sand Hill are able to trace their roots back to the arrival of the Loyalists to Nova Scotia.

"Sand Hill is an important part of Cumberland County's Heritage and never has it it been displayed more uniquely than through the art of this travelling exhibit" states Shirley Nickerson, Manager/Curator of the Cumberland County Museum and Archives. Ms. Strong has captured 250 years of African Nova Scotia history through her panerls."

These unique and beautifully designed panels not only depict the early arrival of Slaves/Servants; it also celebrates the grand strides in areas of social, economical, political, educational and spiritual advancements on Sand Hill.

"Understanding that art plays an integral part of portraying history in a snapshot; the exhibit anticipates engaging a multi age audience to walk through 250 years of living history and EXPERIENCE Sand Hill, which is still a part of our heritage." The Life and Time of Sand Hill Exhibit will open on Thursday, January 28, and run until February 27th.

Come Celebrate Black Heritage Month

The Cumberland County Museum & Archives in conjunction with The Black Loyalist Heritage Society of Shelburne, NS are proud to present the Black Loyalist Heritage Society Travelling Exhibit.

This unique exhibit will take you on a journey back in time. Starting with 1783-1785 when more than 3,000 Black Persons came to Nova Scotia as a direct result of the American Revolution. They came from slavery and wanted to take control of their lives, making choices within the limits they faced."

This travelling Exhibit not only preserves the Story of the Black Loyalist but will give visitors a better understanding of who these people were and what obstacles they had to overcome in the name of "Freedom."

"This exhibit is such an important part of our Heritage" states Shirley Nickerson, Manager/Curator of the Cumberland County Museum & Archives. We are very grateful to the Black Loyalist Society for allowing us to bring this exhibit to Cumberland County. It is an exhibit that we feel the students and residents alike will appreciate and learn from."

Through the panels of this exhibit you will discover the world of Slavery, The American Revolution, Black Loyalist Communities, Heroes and Heroines, the importance of the Certificate of Freedom and so much more.This unique exhibit will be on display at the Cumberland County Museum & Archives for a limited time.

Exhibit will open on Tuesday, January 26 until Saturady, February 27. Hours are Tuesday to Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday 12:00 noon to 5:00pm.

"Memorable - Memories Plus" is a book written by Morris Josef Haugg which is a recounting of his life story from his memories plus his views and philosophies. Even if you don't know this man, the book is an interesting read; once you pick it up, you won't want to put it down until it's finished.

On January 15th, the Cumberland County Museum & Archives will be hosting the public book launch of this book. From 2:00pm to 5:00pm come and meet Morris. Listen to his memories about living through the war, coming to Canada and where he stands today.

New Exhibit Space at the Fundy Geological Museum

Yesterday was a big day for the Fundy Geological Museum. On December 15th, the Government of Canada, as part of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency’s Innovative Communities Fund and the Province of Nova Scotia, through the Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage and the Department of Community Economic Development, announced that they will contribute a total of $1,000,000 to aid in the ongoing refurbishment of the museum. MP Scott Armstrong, on the behalf of Minister Peter MacKay announced an investment of $400,000 while MLA Lenore Zann, on the behalf of the Honourable Percy Paris announced the provincial contribution of $550,000. Work on the museum will be ongoing throughout the winter months with an opening of new exhibits planned for the 2010 tourism season. All the members of the Cumberland County Heritage Network wish to congratulate the good folks of the Fundy Geological Museums and wish them all the best in the work ahead.

Shortage of N1H1 Vaccine in Cumberland County

The Cumberland Health Authority (CHA) has announced that there is now a shortage of vaccine available to the citizens of Cumberland County. As a result, the CHA is limiting vaccine to high-risk groups from November 2nd through November 6th. The following groups will be given the highest priority:

Pregnant Women
Children between 6 months and 59 months (under 5)
Health Care Workers (with valid ID)

Members of First Nations Communities

Long Lines for the N1H1 Flu Clinic in Amherst

As we have seen in other parts of Canada, people are lining up in droves to receive the N1H1 (Human Swine Infuenza) flu shot in Amherst. As the door opened on the first day of the clinic, the line stetched down the street for hundreds of metres. Despite the long lines and the frosty morning, people seemed to be in good spirits and were orderly. The clinic will continue for the entire month of November so their will be ample time for all citizens of the County to receive the vaccine.
